  • Recommendation(s)

EE: Diurnal Variation in Healthy Adults

The registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) may conduct a measurement of resting metabolic rate (RMR) at any time of day in a healthy adult, as long as resting conditions can be achieved. Limited evidence indicates that diurnal variation has minimal effect on RMR in healthy adults.

    Rating: Weak
    Imperative

    • Risks/Harms of Implementing This Recommendation

There are no potential risks or harms associated with the application of this recommendation.

    • Conditions of Application

      • For research, the same time of day should be used throughout the study
      • Clinical judgment should be used in applying this recommendation to healthy children and non-critically ill children and adults, due to no evidence in these populations.

    • Potential Costs Associated with Application

There are no obvious costs associated with the application of this recommendation.

    • Recommendation Narrative

EE: Diurnal Variation in Healthy Adults

      • Two studies provide evidence that diurnal variation has minimal effect on resting metabolic rate (RMR) in healthy adults
      • Additional research on larger, more heterogeneous samples is needed
      • Evidence is based on the following:
        • One neutral-quality time study (Leff et al, 1987)
        • One neutral-quality randomized crossover trial (Weststrate et al, 1989).

    • Recommendation Strength Rationale

Conclusion statement supporting the recommendation is grade III.

    • Minority Opinions

      None.
