Research Purpose:

To determine the serum cholesterol, apolipoproteins and LDL oxidizability in young Japanese women and men during walnut consumption and to evaluate its active principle.

Inclusion Criteria:

Healthy men and women from Kyushu University campus and surrounding area.

Exclusion Criteria:

They were excluded if:

  • they ate nuts frequently
  • had an allergy to nuts
  • smoked
  • history of HTN or atherosclerotic or metabolic disease.
  • taking any medications regularly
  • unable to comply with protocol.
Description of Study Protocol:

Physician confirmed health of subjects.

  1. All subjects followed reference diet for 5 day lead in period.
  2. Randomly assigned to diet with walnuts (52 g per 10 MJ) or reference diet for two weeks.
  3. The subjects then switched groups so everyone consumed the walnut diet for two weeks and the reference diet for two weeks.
  4. All meals were prepared at the metabolic kitchen.  Breakfast and dinner were eaten on site.
Data Collection Summary:

Baseline serum cholesterol was taken at the end of lead in period, and after both 2 week diet periods.

Subjects were weighed after lead-in period and 2x a week thereafter.

Blood pressure was measured after lead in period and 2x during each diet period.

Description of Actual Data Sample:

Summary of Results:

Total cholesterol , apo B, and the ratio of LDL to HDL was significantly lowered in men and women when fed the walnut diets (.p<0.05).

LDL levels were decreased in all subjects, but women showed a significant decrease (.22 mmol/L, p= .0008).

Men did not show a significant decrease (.18mmol/L, p=.078).

LDL oxidizability was not influenced by the diet in women (p=.19).

HDL, TG, weight, and blood pressure  were not significantly affected.

Alpha linolenic acid was significantly increased in serum after the walnut diet (women 76.3% p<.0001) (men 107% p<.0001).

Author Conclusion:

Inclusion of a moderate amount of walnuts without a change in total dietary fat and calories lowers serum cholesterol and favorably modifies the serum lipoprotein and FA profile in normal Japanese men and women, without influencing LDL oxidizability. Evidence suggests alpha linolenic acid in the walnut diet is responsible for lowering LDL levels, especially in women.

The crossover design eliminated confounding variables. The study was very tightly controlled with tests for adherence. 

Both diets were designed to provide RDIs for nutrients.

The way in which the walnuts were incorporated in the diet is explained.

This suggests walnuts may be used in successfully lowering total cholesterol levels and LDL levels in women when calories are controlled.

This corresponds with similar articles.  The experiment period was only 2 weeks in this study compared to 4 and 8 weeks in others.
