• Assessment
    Are the protein requirements of patients with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy different than the RDA?
    • Conclusion

      No studies were identified that addressed the question directly.  More research is needed.

      • High (A) means we are very confident that the true effect lies close to that of the estimate of the effect;
      • Moderate (B) means we are moderately confident in the effect estimate;
      • Low (C) means our confidence in the effect estimate is limited;
      • Very Low (D) means we have very little confidence in the effect estimate.
      • Ungraded means a grade is not assignable.

    Are the protein requirements of patients with testicular cancer undergoing chemotherapy different than the RDA?
    • Conclusion

      One positive quality RCT examined the protein needs of testicular cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy while receiving PN or oral diet alone. Patients that consumed an average of 1.7g protein/Kg (150% REE) gained weight while patients that consumed 0.7g protein/Kg (1484± 200kcal/day) lost weight. This weight gain was in the form of subcutaneous fat. Both groups experienced a comparable loss of LBM during the study period; loss of LBM was measured by whole body protein, total body nitrogen, total body potassium, muscle circumference, and creatinine excretion. Although this study indicates that the needs of testicular cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy are higher than the RDA, more research is needed to identify more defined recommendations for actual grams of protein required.

    Are the protein requirements of patients with various cancer types undergoing chemotherapy different than the RDA?
    • Conclusion
      Two studies (one neutral quality randomized crossover study, one positive quality RCT) assessed the protein requirements of patients with various cancer types undergoing chemotherapy. One neutral rated randomized crossover study found that malnourished patients receiving PN were able to improve nitrogen balance with protein intake of 1.4 ± 0.2g protein/Kg. A positive rated RCT to assess the impact of MNT on protein intake and body composition found that intakes of protein of 1.1 ± 0.4g protein/Kg led to a non-significant increase in LBM in well-nourished patients that received MNT, but not in malnourished patients that receivied MNT. Although these studies indicate that the needs of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy are higher than the RDA, more research is needed to identify more defined recommendations for actual grams of protein required.
