• Assessment
    In the old and very old, what are the energy measurement differences between measurements performed on the same individual over various time periods assuming resting conditions and control for diet-induced thermogenesis, physical activity and body composition are followed?
    • Conclusion

      One study of neutral quality rating (Gibbons, 2004) representing 27 old and very old adults (20 females and 7 males (62-83 years) reports an intra-individual CV range of 0.1-9.9% and 0.0-16.8% in males and females, respectively, with measurements taken one month apart. This resulted in 67 kcal/d mean error of measurement (r=0.80; R2= 64%) variation.

    • Grade: III
      • Grade I means there is Good/Strong evidence supporting the statement;
      • Grade II is Fair;
      • Grade III is Limited/Weak;
      • Grade IV is Expert Opinion Only;
      • Grade V is Not Assignable.
      • High (A) means we are very confident that the true effect lies close to that of the estimate of the effect;
      • Moderate (B) means we are moderately confident in the effect estimate;
      • Low (C) means our confidence in the effect estimate is limited;
      • Very Low (D) means we have very little confidence in the effect estimate.
      • Ungraded means a grade is not assignable.

    • Conclusion

      Two studies of neutral quality rating (Gibbons 2004 and Visser, 1995) representing 180 older adults (67-83 years) reports the group mean intra-individual CV taken within one week or one month was 3-6%.  In one study (Gibbons, 2004), group mean CV expressed as RMR (kcals)/weight (kg)/day was similar to RMR (kcals/day).
