Assessment
In non-obese and obese males, when does aging alter resting metabolic rate?
-
Conclusion
There are no studies meeting sorting criteria and of plus or neutral quality research design quality rating to determine how aging alters RMR in nonobese and obese men.
-
Grade: V
- Grade I means there is Good/Strong evidence supporting the statement;
- Grade II is Fair;
- Grade III is Limited/Weak;
- Grade IV is Expert Opinion Only;
- Grade V is Not Assignable.
- High (A) means we are very confident that the true effect lies close to that of the estimate of the effect;
- Moderate (B) means we are moderately confident in the effect estimate;
- Low (C) means our confidence in the effect estimate is limited;
- Very Low (D) means we have very little confidence in the effect estimate.
- Ungraded means a grade is not assignable.
In non-obese and obese females, when does aging alter resting metabolic rate?-
Conclusion
One nonrandomized control study of neutral research design quality (VanPelt RE, et al, 1997) reported 15 post-menopausal sedentary females, 50-72 years, had a 10% lower adjusted RMR (i.e., adjusted for fat mass and fat-free mass) compared to 12 pre-menopausal sedentary females, ages 21-25 y; (assuming normal distribution, 44-60 kcal/hr vs. 50-67 kcal/hour; representing ~6-7 kcal/h difference or 144 to 168 kcal/d) (p<0.001).

Overall, in non-obese and obese males and females, when does aging alter resting metabolic rate?-
Conclusion
The RMR of decline in men is unknown while mean RMR of decline in post-menopausal women is 10% lower (approximately 144-168 kcal/d lower) than pre-menopausal women. The decline in women is not fully explained by losses of fat-free mass.
