Nutritive and Non-Nutritive Sweeteners

NNNS: Adverse Effects (2011)

The Nutritive and Non-Nutritive Sweeteners workgroup (2009-10) developed the questions below on the adverse effects for each non-nutritive sweetener.
  • Only non-nutritive sweeteners approved by the FDA and considered to be safe for human consumption are included in the N&NNS evidence analysis project.
  • The Academy does not evaluate safety; however we do summarize the human subject research published in peer-reviewed journals regarding adverse effects.
  • The workgroup notes that research is limited in this area, particularly the lack of data from longitudinal cohort studies. Considering the lack of high-quality human subject research studies, continuing post-market surveillance of non-nutritive sweeteners is prudent.
