NSUP: Vitamin D (2014)

The expert workgroup prioritized topics utilizing the following criteria:
  • Certainty vs. Uncertainty
  • New Research Exists
  • Importance to Dietitians/Practitioners (or others as applicable)
  • Importance for targeted stakeholders (e.g., policy decisions, relevant to Medicaid, Medicare, and other payers)
  • Date of Project
  • May reduce costs to health care system, patient, public health
  • May reduce controversy/unexplained variation in practice
  • Time and resources
The top two topics selected were Vitamin D and Vitamin E. Next, the expert workgroup developed a list of questions on Vitamin D. The question list was prioritized and the following questions were selected.
  1. What is the association between serum 25(OH) D concentrations and bone health outcomes in health adults (18+)?
  2. What is the association between serum 25(OH) D concentrations and bone health outcomes in elderly men?
  3. What is the association between serum 25(OH) D concentrations and bone health outcomes in post-menopausal women?
Prior to starting a search and review of the available evidence in the spring of 2014, the workgroup was informed that the Agency for Healthcare and Research Quality (AHRQ) was in the process of completing a systematic review on vitamin D. The report was published in September 2014. After review of this report by the expert workgroup, project lead analyst and Academy staff, it was confirmed that the AHRQ report, Vitamin D and Calcium: A Systematic Review of Health Outcomes (Update), answered the workgroup's questions on vitamin D. Finally, the oversite committee of the Evidence Analysis Library, the Evidence-Based Practice Committee, approved the referral of the EAL users to the above report.
