Vitamin D Supplementation
-
Intervention
In patients with heart failure (NYHA Classes I–IV/AHA Stages B and C), what is the effect of vitamin D supplementation on quality measures (re-admissions rate, length of stay, mortality)?
-
Conclusion
In patients with heart failure (NYHA Classes I–IV/AHA Stages B and C), research reported that among patients randomized to either the intervention group receiving 2,000 IU oral vitamin D3 daily for six weeks or the control group, the two adverse events that occurred during the course of the study (one death and one hospitalization) were not associated with the vitamin D supplementation. However, due to the interactions between vitamin D and some common medications (oral corticosteroids, thyroxin, anti-epileptics, tetracyclines and quinolones), it is unclear whether this dose and duration of vitamin D would be appropriate for patients with heart failure. Research is needed regarding the effect of vitamin D supplementation on quality measures in patients with heart failure.

Grade: III
- Grade I means there is Good/Strong evidence supporting the statement;
- Grade II is Fair;
- Grade III is Limited/Weak;
- Grade IV is Expert Opinion Only;
- Grade V is Not Assignable.
- High (A) means we are very confident that the true effect lies close to that of the estimate of the effect;
- Moderate (B) means we are moderately confident in the effect estimate;
- Low (C) means our confidence in the effect estimate is limited;
- Very Low (D) means we have very little confidence in the effect estimate.
- Ungraded means a grade is not assignable.

In patients with heart failure (NYHA Classes I–IV/AHA Stages B and C), what is the effect of vitamin D supplementation on renal function labs and clinical labs?-
Conclusion
In patients with heart failure (NYHA Classes I–IV/AHA Stages B and C), research reported no significant differences in N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels after six weeks within or between groups receiving either 2,000 IU oral vitamin D3 daily or no supplementation. Research is needed regarding the effect of vitamin D supplementation on renal function labs and clinical labs in patients with heart failure.
