Research Purpose:
To investigate the extent to which parents' degree of dietary self-control (as measured by self-reported dietary restraint, disinhibition and perceived hunger) affects the development of excess body fat in the child.

Description of Study Protocol:
  • Self-reported levels of parental dietary restraint, disinhibition and perceived hunger were estimated using Stunkard and Messick's Three-Factor-Eating Questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements (height, weight and skinfold measurements at five sites) were obtained yearly for children and parents.
  • Families followed for six years (from the Framingham Children’s study).

Statistical Analyses

  • Calculated mean dietary restraint, disinhibition and hunger scores for mothers and fathers combined
  • Simple linear regression model was used to assess the change in body fat for each anthropometry variable
  • Analysis of covariance was used to compare the mean slope of child’s BMI, triceps and sum of skin folds over six years across tertiles of the parent scores
  • T-test was used to assess the linear trend in anthropometry values across tertiles of that subscale.

Summary of Results:
  • Children whose parents reported higher levels of dietary restraint or disinhibition had greater increases in their BMI, triceps and sum of skinfolds than those whose parents had the lowest levels of restraint or disinihibition
  • After adjusting for the BMI of both parents, the mother’s obesity had a stronger effect on the child’s body fat change than did the father’s level of obesity
  • Disinhibition alone (without high restraint) had an adverse effect on body fat change (47.1mm gain), compared with dietary restraint in the presence of low disinhibition (36.9mm gain)
  • Thus, it was only in the presence of high inhibition that dietary restraint led to excess gains in body fat in the study children
  • When both parents had above average scores on dietary inhibition or restraint, the children had greater increases in body fat on all anthropometry measures than only when one parent or neither parent had high scores on those factors (P=0.0003)
  • Parental scores on perceived hunger scale had no clear effect on body fat change of children
  • The children with greatest increases in body fat were those whose parents scored high levels on both dietary restraint and disinhibition (61.4mm gain in sum of skinfolds).
Author Conclusion:
  • Parents who display high levels of disinhibited eating, especially when coupled with high dietary restraint, may foster the development of excess body fat in their children
  • This association may be mediated by direct parental role modeling of unhealthy eating behaviors or through other indirect and probably subconscious behavioral consequences, such as suppression of the child’s innate regulation of dietary intake.

  • Parental control may have been a consequence, rather than leading to overweight in the child
  • Small sample size; limited ability to examine gender differences.
