Research Purpose:

To further explore the relation among weight, sex and family functioning in a large sample of boys and girls that included a full weight range.

Inclusion Criteria:

Attempted recruitment of all students in grades nine through 11 from three English public high schools in Montreal, Quebec.

Exclusion Criteria:

Excluded data from fathers because of small sample.

Description of Study Protocol:
  • After students completed the questionnaire, their height and weight were measured
  • Following data collection, information letters and questionnaires were sent to the parents; mother’s assessment of family functioning, demographic info, self-report height and weight and perception of weight status.
Data Collection Summary:
  • Dependent variables: Weight group: Underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese (measure weight and height)
  • Independent variables: Family functioning: Cohesion, democratic style, authoritarianism, conflict and expressiveness (Bloom’s self-report measure of family functioning)

Summary of Results:
  • A main effect was found for gender and a significant weight group X sex interaction was also noted
  • Obese girls rated their families lower on the three subscales than did other adolescents
  • As adolescent girls became more overweight they reported lower cohesion, expressiveness and democratic style in their families
  • Obese and overweight boys did not differ from normal weight boys on any dimension of family functioning
  • Mothers seemed to have more positive views of the family environment than did adolescents.
Author Conclusion:
These results appear to be in-line with society’s prejudice against fatness, particularly in women.

Reviewer Comments:
  • Aside from gender, the analysis did not control for any potential confounding factors (at least that were noted) 
  • It is not stated if the inclusion was limited to families with both parents living in the house. It seems that the number of parents in the household would impact the family style.
  • Also, no analysis was done to see if the overweight and obese children differ in any other ways from the underweight and normal weight children
  •  Little information given to indicate that weight and height measurements were accurate.
