Research Purpose:

The purpose of the study was to describe the prevalence of participation in moderate and vigorous physical activity and television watching and to examine the associations between physical activity, television watching, and weight status in 14-18 year old U.S. youth.

Data Collection Summary:

Primary outcome was BMI with overweight status defined using age and sex specific values > 85%tile from the CDC National Center for Health Statistics growth charts

 

Three physical activity / inactivity measures were obtained by self report:

  1. Moderate PA (MPA): “on how many of the past 7 days did you participate in physical activity for at least 30 minutes that did not make you sweat or breathe hard.”
  2. Vigorous PA (BPA):  “on how many of the past 7 days did you exercise or participate in physical activity for at least 20 minutes that did make you sweat or breathe hard.”
  3. TV viewing: “On an average school day, how many hours do you watch television”?

Statistical Analyses:

  • BMI was compared across levels of MPA, VPA and TV by ANCOVA, with age and ethnicity as covariates.
  • Logistic regression models controlling for age and ethnicity were used to examine the relationship between PA, TV and overweight status.
  • Data were run separately for each sex.
Description of Actual Data Sample:
  • 15143 boys and girls ages 14-18 years old.
  • Sample included African Americans, Hispanics and whites.
Summary of Results:
  • A total of 65% of respondents reported participating in VPA 3 or more days per week.
  • A total of 45% of respondents reported participating in MPA 3 or more days per week.
  • A total of about 25% of youth 14-18 reported watching television > 4 hours per day.

Physical Activity and BMI

  • The BMI was significantly lower in boys and girls participating in 6-7 bouts of VPA a week. There was also a 25% greater likelihood of being overweight if participants performed less than 6-7 bouts of VPA a week but the OR was only significant for the boys (OR = 1.26 (1.01-1.57)).
  • The BMI was significantly lower in boys participating in 6-7 bouts of MPA a week. For boys, there was about a 35% greater likelihood of being overweight if participants performed less than 6-7 bouts of MPA a week (OR = 1.32 (1.04-1.57) for 3-5 bouts per week; OR = 1.37 (1.17-1.61) for individuals performing < 2 bouts a week). The OR values predicting likelihood for girls performing less than 6-7 bouts were greater than 1 but not significant. (OR = 1.26 (1.01-1.57)).

TV Watching and BMI

  • There was a significant graded response for the BMI across levels of TV watching in both sexes (p < .01). Boys and girls were ~ 20-25% less likely (OR = .78 and .74, respectively) to be classified as overweight if they reported 2-3 hours of TV per day and ~40% less likely (OR = .58 and .61, respectively) to be classified as overweight if they reported 1 hour of TV per day compared to those who watched > 4 hours of TV. All of these values were significant.
Author Conclusion:
  • Increased levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity are associated with a lower BMI and less TV watching. Increased TV is associated with an increased BMI.
  • Participation in a large amount of moderate or vigorous activity was associated with a reduced likelihood of overweight in boys but not girls.
  • For TV watching, boys and girls were less likely to be overweight if they watched less than 2-3 hours of TV.
  • Compared with physical activity, “….the relationship between TV watching and weight status is more pronounced.”
