Research Purpose:

This study examined differences in physical, behavioral, psychosocial, and environmental factors associated with PA among black and white adolescent girls living in rural and urban areas

Measures were administered in small group settings (6 to 10 girls) in the schools by trained data collectors using standardized procedures.

Description of Actual Data Sample:

 

Initial N: The original sample included 2064 girls from 31 schools. The sample was reduced because of missing data.

Attrition (final N): 1668 girlst hat had complete data.

Age: mean age of 13.4 years

Summary of Results:

Physical Activity

Black girls were less active than white girls for both moderate and vigorous activity.

 

  • Interaction for vigorous activity of race and setting:
  • In a rural setting black girls were more active than white girls (p<.001)
  • White girls were more active in an urban setting than black girls (p<.001). 

TV Watching

Black girls watched more TV than white girls (5 hrs compared to 3 hours) (p<.001) and had higher BMIs (24 vs. 22)  (p<.001) and greater prevalence of overweight (46% vs. 30%) (p<.001).

Author Conclusion:

Black girls reported significantly lower levels of PA both moderate and vigorous PA.

Black girls had significantly higher levels of watching TV and had significantly higher BMIs.

Strengths:

Large sample

Limitation:

  • Relied on self-report
  • Did not control for SES
  • Urban areas were small urban areas so it may not generalize to larger urban areas.
