1) To document the magnitude of dehydration via measurement of total body water (TBW) during cold weather operations; 2) to compare the TBW changes to other more readily accessible indicators od dehydration.

Other Findings

 Sig decrease of 2.6% BW over 8d.  Change in BW reflected change in body composition and change in TBW.  Skinfold and Deuterated water method highly correlated for BF (r=0.91, P<0.01).  NS changes observed for Uosm, Usg, Una, Uk.  Strong relationship (r=0.95, p<0.01) found between Usg and Uosm.  No relationship found between TBW and any blood or urine indices.  Dietary logs reflected difficulty getting adequate fluids. 

Author Conclusion:

No relationships found between TBW and any clinical indices of dehydration – significant dehydration did not occur over the 8d.  Change in TBW was reflective of decrease in LBM.  Further research is needed to determine value of Usg, Uosm, Ucol as methods of assessing hydration status in the field.  Changes in body compositions must be considered when using BW or TBW measures to evaluate changes in hydration status.

Since significant degydration did not occur during the study period,  hydration status indices used in this study could not be used to identify the most valid indices of tracking hypohydration.
