 prior to testing:  VO2peak determined (cycle).

Test sessions:  After a 10h fast (though subjects were allowed to drink as much water as desired), body weight recorded, NG tube inserted.  Stomach was rinsed repeatedly with distilled water until aspirated fluid remained clear.  Positioning of tube checked by infusing 180 ml water and aspirating contents. 

Subjects cycled average power setting of 151±2 W (70.4±0.5% VO2peak) in environmental chamber (22.8±0.1C, %RH not described).  Selected own pedal cadence.  HR, RPE, VO2 recorded at 10, 40, 85 min. 

Consumed 227±3 ml of 1 of 4 drinks every 15 min during exercise.  Subjective ratings of fullness after ingestion of beverage. 

Gastric volume determined via aspiration of 20 ml of gastric contents at 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 min (as each beverage was ingested)

Other Findings

 NS differences in body weight, change in body weight, sweat rate, VO2, HR, RER, RPE between the trials.

Gastric emptying:  gross gastric volume was sig greater and the %beverage emptied from the stomach was sig less for 8% CES than for the other drinks at 45, 60, 75, 90 min of exercise (P<0.05). 

Subjective ratings of fullness:  water and 4% CES had lower scores on palatability, thirst quenching than did 6% and 8% CES.  Gastric fullness was greater for water than for all other drinks. 

Author Conclusion:

Repeated ingestion of 8% CES during exercise significantly reduces gastric emptying, whereas lower CES do not. If gastric emptying and intestinal absorption are reduced after ingesting 8%CES, fluid replacement will be compromised and the risk of GI discomfort may be increased. 

Beverage osmolality is not as important as beverage energy content in influencing gastric emptying rate at these CHO concentrations.
