Inclusion Criteria:
  • N=2,379
  • Girls nine or 10 years at baseline
  • University of California, Berkeley recruited girls from public/parochial schools in Richmond United School District
  • University of Cincinnati/Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center recruited from all schools in Hamilton County
  • Westat, Inc./Group Health Association, Rockville, Maryland, randomly selected girls from families enrolled in Washington, DC-area health maintenance organizations and Girl Scout troops.

Research Purpose:
To examine longitudinal changes in consumption of six types of beverages in girls and determine the relationship between beverage intake, body mass index (BMI) and nutrient intake. These changes in consumption include:
  • Milk
  • Diet
  • Regular soda
  • Fruit juice
  • Fruit-favored drinks
  • Coffee/tea.
