Inclusion Criteria:
  • N=96,756:
    • Aged two and three years old
    • Enrolled in the Missouri Women''s, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program between January 1999 and December 2001
    • Had at least 1 clinic visit during this time.
  • N=45,499 children from the Demonstration Project and who had completed the Harvard Service Food Frequency Questionnaire (HFFQ) from 2000 to 2002
  • These two data sets were merged using single identifiers and exclusions (N=37,421)
  • Final N=10,904 children who had a follow-up clinic visit and data collected one year later.
Exclusion Criteria:
  • Clinical records lacked missing values for key variables
  • Extreme BMI values (Z score less than four or more than five)
  • Missing values for key variables on HFFQ
  • Having extremes in total energy intake (less than 800 or more than 3,500 calories)
  • Missing follow-up data one year later.
Research Purpose:
To examine the longitudinal association between the consumption of all commonly consumed sweet drinks and the incidence and persistence of overweight among pre-school children.
