Stable weight prior to bariatric surgery (within 2.3kg of initial weight during the month before testing) Underwent gastric bypass surgery Informed consent.
Exclusion Criteria:
Diabetes Cancer Coronary heart disease Endocrine disorders Acute or chronic diseases Medications known to influence energy expenditure.
Research Purpose:
To determine the magnitude of changes in total energy expenditure (TEE) and components of energy expenditure with massive weight loss and subsequent weight restabilization in subjects undergoing gastric bypass surgery To examine baseline variables [TEE, resting energy expenditure (REE), substrate oxidation] and fasting leptin concentrations for predicting body weight and fat loss in individual subjects.
Blinding efforts:
No blinding of participants or investigators.
