Inclusion Criteria:
Key inclusion criteria were defined as men and women >45 years and <70 years, TC between 200 ā€“250 mg dL-1 (5.18ā€“6.47 mmol Lā€“1), triglycerides (TG) <300 mg dL-1 (3.39 mmol L-1) and systolic blood pressure ,160 mmHg.
Exclusion Criteria:
Exclusion criteria were having a body mass index (BMI) 30 kg m-2, familial hypercholesterolaemia, history of phytosterolaemia, severe concomitant diseases, coronary event and food allergies, and, for women, being pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breast-feeding. Individuals were also excluded if they had previously consumed or were currently consuming foods or supplements containing PS or plant stanols, were using cholesterol-lowering medication or anti-diabetic drugs, were already included in other epidemiological studies and/or clinical trials, were smoking,
Research Purpose:
The present study aimed to investigate the effect of structured dietary advice provided by a dietitian compared to standard advice provided by a physician on dietary changes including the consumption of foods with added plant sterols on lowering serum cholesterol levels during a 6-week intervention programme. In addition, the study assessed whether these dietary behavioural modifications were maintained during another 6-week follow-up period under real-life conditions.
