Inclusion Criteria:
Consecutive patients admitted to one of two wards at the Department of Geriatric Medicine at Rosenlund Hospital, Stockholm, between January 1999 and June 2000. (One ward treated elderly adults after trauma with and without fracture, and the other treated acutely ill elderly patients with various somatic disorders.); nutritional status assessed by MNA-SF within 3 days of admission and determined to be at risk of protein energy malnutrition (MNA-SF score less than or equal to 10); all participants and their next of kin provided consent.
Exclusion Criteria:
Malignant disorder; terminal illness; tevere cognitive dysfunction (Mini mental state examination score <16).
Research Purpose:
To assess the effects of combine nutrition intervention, i.e. dietary counseling, liquid and vitamin supplementation on weight, activities of daily living (ADL) functions, quality of life (QoL) assessment and biochemical indices in geriatric patients at risk of malnutrition, after discharge from hospital.
Blinding efforts:
Random allocation to either intervention or control group was performed by drawing files from a sealed box. RDN providing intervention and participants aware of group assignment.
