Inclusion Criteria:
Under 75 years; waist circumference >100cm men, >90cm women; self identification as Maori with additional criteria to confirm.
Exclusion Criteria:
Diabetes self reported or following a glucose tolerance test (OGTT); pregnancy; lactation; current attempts to lose weight; weight loss of 2 kg or more in the previous 2 months; evidence of chronic disease; use of drugs influencing glucose levels and body weight.
Research Purpose:
To compare, in people at risk of diabetes, the standard dietary prescription emphasizing the benefits of fiber-rich carbohydrate foods, with a diet compatible with food choices of indigenous people, including more protein-rich foods and less carbohydrate. A secondary aim was to examine the extent to which dietary compliance could be sustained following cessation of intensive intervention.
