Inclusion Criteria:
Older men and women, aged 60 to 85 years, with mild diastolic hypertension (DBP, 85 to 100 mm Hg) who were at least modestly overweight (115% of ideal body weight or greater by 1983 Metropolitan Life Insurance Company tables).
Exclusion Criteria:
Exclusion criteria included history of myocardial infarction within the past year, previous diagnosis of angina pectoris or congestive heart failure, stroke within the last year, other serious cardiovascular disease, or diabetes mellitus.
Research Purpose:
To determine if a combined nonpharmacologic intervention involving weight reduction, sodium restriction, and increased physical activity in older patients with a DBP of 85 to 100 mm Hg would result in significant lowering of DBP.
