Inclusion Criteria:
Community dwelling; aged 70 and older; admitted to hospital with an acute illness between February 2006 and June 2008; BMI<24.0; mid-arm circumference below the 10th percentile or weight loss of 5% or more during the hospital stay.
Exclusion Criteria:
Barthel score greater than 18; chronic liver disease or renal failure (serum creatinine >3.39 mg/dL); residence in a care home; cognitive impairment precluding informed consent; Dysphagia; metastatic carcinoma or other terminal illness; acute inflammatory arthritis; stroke affecting both hands; major surgery within the preceding month.
Research Purpose:
Determine whether oral nutritional supplementation is associated with a reduction in disability in undernourished older people after hospital discharge.
Blinding efforts:
Blinded for participants and observers using a matching control supplement

Community-based study in Scotland, individuals living at home post acute illness hospital discharge
