Inclusion Criteria:
Residents of Hebrew Rehab Center for Aged (HRCA); > 70 years; able to walk at least six meters without assistance; subjects not included in the exercise arm of the FICSIT ( Frailty and Injuries: Cooperative Studies of Intervention Techniques) study.
Exclusion Criteria:
Rapidly progressing or terminal illness; acute illness or unstable chronic illness; severe cognitive impairment precluding understanding of informed consent; insulin-dependent diabetes; significant obesity (BMI > 32.0 kg/m2); current prescription for weight loss diet; recent (< 6 mos) myocardial infarction; recent fracture of a lower extremity.
Research Purpose:
To test the hypothesis that the daily provision of a supplement containing approximately 20% additional energy above the habitual diet, in a balanced ratio of macro and micronutrients, would augment nutritional status, as measured by total dietary intake, nutritional biochemistries, anthropometrics, body composition, and functional performance.
Blinding efforts:
Nursing staff and subjects were blinded as to the contents of the supplements provided.
