Inclusion Criteria:
Resident in one of six nursing homes in Nuremberg or Fuerth, Germany between March 2009 and May 2010; identified with malnutrition or at risk of malnutrition via standardized screening [Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) score <24]; BMI of 22 or less, a low food intake according to nurses' perception, weight loss of 5% or more in the past 3 months or 10% or more in the past 6 months; written informed consent by resident or responsible proxie for both screening and participation in trial.
Exclusion Criteria:
Anticipated hospital stay greater than 1 week; renal disease (dialysis); end stage disease; intolerance to oral nutrition supplements (ONS) according to previous attempts to administer these.
Research Purpose:
To investigate the effects of a low-volume, nutrient- and energy-dense ONS on nutritional and functional status as well as quality of life of nursing home residents, deliberately including those with cognitive and mobility impairment.
