Inclusion Criteria:
Resided in a nursing home; required special care from a helper.
Exclusion Criteria:
BMI (in kg/m2) >23 (to avoid a further increase in body weight); 200 mg/dL, blood creatinine concentration of >1.5 mg/dL, or C-reactive protein concentration of >2.0 mg/dL; allergy to the supplements used in the study.
Research Purpose:
To determine whether supplementation with a combination of small amounts of leucine-enriched EAAs (40% leucine in 3 g EAAs), cholecalciferol (20mg, 800 IU), and MCTs (6 g) could achieve a synergistic or additive improvement in skeletal muscle function.
Blinding efforts:
Participants in the intervention and control groups could not be blinded. However, in the intervention groups, the participants could not distinguish between the two different supplements. Examiners who oversaw the walking speed test were unaware of each participant's group. Other anthropometric and physical performance tests were conducted by an expert who was aware of the participant's group assignment.
