Inclusion Criteria:
Ages 21-65 years. Preliminary screening: blood pressure of 100 mmHg who were already on antihypertensive medication or 90-104 mmHg for those not on treatment. Second screening: diastolic blood pressure from 90 to 100 mm Hg and weight of 110% to 160% of ideal weight.
Exclusion Criteria:
Evidence of myocardial infarction, stroke, bronchial asthma, a serum creatinine level of 176.8 mmol/d (2.0 mg/dL) or greater, diabetes requiring insulin therapy, allergy to thiazides or beta-blockers, or likelihood of difficulty in complying with the intervention.
Research Purpose:
To evaluate the 6-month change in cardiovascular risk as a function of diet and drug therapy for mild hypertension.
