Inclusion Criteria:
African American men or women, age 18 years or older, BMI >/= 23 kg/m, willing to participate, able to provide informed consent and willing to make monthly visits to the program site for 12 months.
Exclusion Criteria:
Recent and serious medical conditions, medications such as diabetes drugs and lipid-lowering agents, on a medically supervised diet, diagnosed eating disorders, pregnancy and participation in another lifestyle modification program. Only one person per household was allowed to participate in the program.
Research Purpose:
To report the results from a 12 month pilot health promotion program at a community center. The purpose of the pilot program was to improve diet and physical activity to prevent weight gain in African American adults.
