Inclusion Criteria:
Adults aged 20-80 years; type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosis for more than 1 year; poorly controlled HbA1c >/= 58 mol/mol (7.5%) in the previous three months regardless of medication.
Exclusion Criteria:
Pregnant or lactating women; impaired renal function with serum creatinine >/= 132.6 umol/L (1.5 mg/dL); Abnormal liver function (alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartame aminotransferase >/= 3 times the normal upper limit; liver cirrhosis; significant heart diseases (unstable angina, unstable heart failure); Frequent gout attacks (>/= 3 times/year); participation in other weight loss programs or use of weight loss drugs; eating disorders; inability to complete the questionnaire.
Research Purpose:
To explore the effect of a moderate (90 g/d) low carbohydrate diet (LCD) in type 2 diabetes patients over 18 months.
Blinding efforts:
A blind evaluator calculated calorie and nutrition intake from three day weighted food records.
